Estrella Football Group Withdraws From Proposed Investment in Greenock Morton FC

Aug 18, 2026

As a direct result of the outcome of this week's members' meeting of Morton Club Together (MCT), Estrella Football Group is withdrawing from its proposed investment in Greenock Morton Football Club. Estrella and MCT signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2026 for a minority investment in the Club. At that time, the Club was presented as a stable, break-even organisation performing consistently in the Scottish Championship.

Since then, the Club's situation has deteriorated significantly, both financially and on the pitch. The first team has gone twelve matches without a win, and the Club's financial position has come under serious pressure, with liquidity now a genuine concern. The process has, in addition, reached a point where, in Estrella's assessment, insufficient basis remains to continue the partnership on its current footing.

Given the tight timelines involved, and with this week's vote on the proposal not going ahead, Estrella unfortunately has no choice but to step back from the deal. There simply is no longer enough time left to support the Club in the way that would be needed, including on the football side, before the transfer window closes. Under these circumstances, the investment no longer fits within the conditions Estrella sets for itself, and continuing is, regrettably, not something Estrella can responsibly do.

Greenock Morton Football Club remains a special club with real potential, and its supporters deserve the best. Estrella wishes the Club, its players, staff and supporters well. Should the Club's circumstances change in future, Estrella would welcome the opportunity to revisit its involvement.
